  • Practice Test Site Update for 2017-2018

Based on feedback from the field, both online and paper practice test materials have had a major refresh for the 2017-2018 school year. Districts can now see these changes to the Practice Test Site. The 2017-2018 Practice Site Guidance Document covers these changes in detail and provides step by step directions for using the Practice Test Site.

Practice Tests and Item Release Tests
Updated online practice tests for all grades and subjects are available (with the exception of Physical Science). The practice tests feature item level scoring; no overall test scores are provided.

Additional items have been released from spring 2015 and spring 2016 science and social studies tests and have been added to the respective item release tests on the site. The 2015 tests represent the entire test content given in spring 2015. Spring 2017 item release tests for all grades and subjects are also available (with the exception of Physical Science).

    New Student Login Feature
Students are able to un-select the guest option on the Practice Test Site login screen and login with their first name and SSID as they do for operational tests. This optional login choice requires student information be present in TIDE. The guest login remains the default option and allows anyone (e.g., parents) to experience online testing.

    Desmos Calculators
Beginning with the 2017-2018 school year, the Ohio’s State Tests will use Desmos as the online calculator. Practice tests that have the calculator tool have been updated to provide students with the Desmos calculator. The Desmos calculators will also be available on the Student Practice Resources page of the portal.

    Paper Practice Tests
New and updated paper practice test materials are available on the Student Practice Resources page of the portal. This includes:

    • English language arts and mathematics practice test materials
    • Revised science and social studies practice test materials
    • Scoring guides for practice materials

    Special Version Practice Tests
Special version practice materials will be available on the Student Practice Resources page later in the fall. Districts will have access to large print practice tests for all grades and subjects starting at the end of September. Districts will have access to braille practice test materials for all grades and subjects starting at the end of November. Watch for future communication on how to request braille practice test materials.

  • Additional Practice Materials Available

Additional practice materials, resources and revised test specifications are now available on the Ohio’s State Tests Portal.

    • English language arts –Sample items for grades 4-8 are now available in the Student Practice Site to join the already available sample items for grade 3 and high school.
    • Science – The Part 2 (or EOY) practices tests for grades 5 and 8 now include additional practice items. Updated test specifications are now available for all science tests in the General Resources folder.
    • Social studies – Updated test specifications are now available for all social studies tests in the General Resources folder. In addition, the Part 2 (or EOY) practice test for American history now includes additional practice items. These items will constitute an evidence-based set, which is a group of several questions associated with one or more common stimuli. Evidence-based sets allow students to work with primary source materials to show deep understanding of social studies topics. The questions in these sets will assess a range of the skills and content in the content statements.

New support documents are available in the Student Practice Resources folder on the Portal. These include:

    • Updated Practice Site Guidance Document
    • Answer keys for the sample grades 4-8 English language arts sample items
    • Updated scoring guides for the grade 5 EOY practice test, grade 8 EOY test and American history EOY test.

You will see more details and links to these resources on the department’s Practice Test and Sample Items Web page.
