  • Writing Dimension Scores in Student Results Files

As previously indicated, six writing dimension score fields have been added to the District Student Results File Layout for 2018-2019. These scores are available to download beginning today, December 17.

Please find information below that may help districts when reviewing this data.

    • Each writing item is evaluated on three dimensions – Purpose, Focus, and Organization (organization), Evidence and Elaboration (elaboration) and Conventions of Standard English (conventions).
    • Organization and elaboration are scored on a 0 to 4 point scale. Conventions is scored on a 0 to 2 point scale.
    • Per the English language arts blueprint, students in grades 3 to 5 receive one writing item. The writing prompt could be one of two types – Opinion or Informative/Explanatory.
    • Per the English language arts blueprint, students in grades 6 and up receive two writing items. One writing prompt will be Argumentation and one writing prompt will be Informative/Explanatory.
    • When reviewing the data files, Writing Item 1 fields contain dimension scores for the Opinion (G3-5) or Argumentation (G6+) item.   Writing Item 2 fields contain dimension scores for the Informative/Explanatory item. If a student only received one item (e.g., fall 2018 grade 3 students only received an Informative/Explanatory item), only those fields based on the writing type received are populated. The other fields are left blank.
    • More information on the writing rubrics for each type of writing are available here.
